2After helping a friend and creating a petition to authorize leather footwear as a part of our school uniform, Sophomore Alex Hashemi was nominated for the “Crushed It Cup,” and is the Wick’s Student of the Month. When asked why she is so passionate about allowing leather footwear at school, Alex referred to her interest in expanding fashion choices, such as including leather shoes, as a motivator. Alex and many other students want to express themselves and find the regulations of school attire limiting. While Alex was disappointed that her petition was denied, she was grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate student dissatisfaction with what she views as overly rigid uniform requirements. Alex hopes that eventually girls will be able to communicate desired changes to the administration more easily.
When she’s not petitioning, Alex enjoys spending time with her friends. This was a major factor in why she lent her leggings to fellow tenth grader, Yamen Oraegbu. Yamen complained that she would be cold during a volleyball game. Even though Alex had to walk home, she believed she could do without them, and offered them to her classmate. She explained, “It is not that hard to do nice things for others. It is good karma.” Alex is flattered that she won the “Crushed It Cup,” if not a bit embarrassed. Alex reminds students that small acts of kindness can have a massive effect on our school and the world.
