The Freshmen Day of Service

While the sophomores and juniors took the PSAT, the freshmen spent a day helping various non-profit organizations. For many years, the freshman class has participated in this Day of Service trip, and this day is an opportunity to create bonds with new friends and to help the larger community.

Beginning in the Cradles to Crayons warehouse, the freshmen split up into different groups, each assigned to a separate working station. These stations included washing shoes, sorting clothing based on size and type, sorting books, and organizing school supplies. We all worked collaboratively to do the job efficiently, and hopefully we had an impact. After a lunch break, we traveled to Small Things Philly, an organization that distributes food and household goods to community centers, food pantries, and churches in and around Philadelphia.

At Small Things Philly, some of us packaged bread bags into boxes, put the boxes together, and stacked them on wooden trays. Others assembled grocery baskets, which contained cooking necessities such as oil and milk. The baskets also provided snacks like cereal and raisins. We used an assembly line to make the work quicker, more fun, and more engaging. Others also packed healthy snacks into bags because Small Things Philly believes that in a world where many go hungry, all people should have access to healthy food options.
