Lunar New Year happens each year sometime between January 21 and February 20. This year it is on February 10 and it is the year of the dragon. Before New Year’s, people first clean their houses to “sweep away” the past year and bring good luck. Wearing new clothing on New Year’s will also bring you a lucky year. People celebrate on New Year’s day by lighting firecrackers and watching a lion-dance. Adults also give children hong bao (‘red envelopes’) filled with money, and families will get together to have a meal. Certain foods are considered lucky, such as dumplings, fish, chicken, mustard greens, and nian gao (‘sticky cake’).
