Wick Introduction

Dear AIS,

Once again, welcome to The Wick: The Agnes Irwin School’s newspaper. As an introduction, we are Samantha Pierce and Rachel Avery, this year’s editors-in-chief. We are beyond ecstatic to serve as The Wick’s leaders to ensure everything in the publishing process runs smoothly and we are sure that you will come to love the (ever-improving) Wick.

The Wick is a student-run newspaper that has persisted in our school culture for decades. Our hardworking staff is behind everything you see, from articles and crosswords to social media posts and website updates, and everything you don’t see, like brainstorming and conceptualizing.

Last year, we officially launched our Instagram. We published reels and posts, so the student body could better learn about the newspaper and our staff. We have a lot of plans with our Instagram and this publication. As technology becomes more prevalent in journalism, we want The Wick to keep up with the trend while maintaining the nostalgic broadsheet style layout. For example, we hope to be active on Instagram and our website since it is sometimes easier for high school students to interact and share feedback over social media.

We have a lot of exciting ideas for The Wick. As always, one of our primary goals as editors is to expand its reach and interact more with the student body. If everything goes according to plan, AIS can look out for a middle school article competition wherein middle schoolers can have a shot at publishing their work in The Wick. As a reminder, we also accept guest articles from people in the community who are not staff members. If there are any topics you want to see covered but you’re not interested in writing about them, contact us or fill out our “Tip Jar,” linked on our website, “AISPress.org,” and in our Instagram bio. Additionally, if you have any announcements you would like us to display, please email us so we can post them on our Instagram and, if time-relevant, print them in our issues.

We are always looking to expand our Wick family! If you are interested in joining our staff, whether to write, join the social media team, or work on newspaper visuals, please contact us! You can reach out to either of us at [email protected] or [email protected]. We are excited for you all to learn more about this wonderful publication and hopefully get involved!

Sincerely,

Rachel and Samantha
