The Agnes Irwin School and Episcopal Academy Spirit Week has come and gone, but this year’s festivities have been nothing short of memorable—if not a little chaotic. Leading up to the highly anticipated AIS/EA Day, students from both schools celebrated their rivalry and school spirit with a week of themed free-dress days.
Spirit Week kicked off with a bang on Monday for “Decades Day.” Each grade was assigned a different era to represent: freshmen as the 2000s, sophomores as the ’90s, juniors as the ’70s, and seniors as the roaring ’20s. The day was a success, with nearly everyone getting into the spirit and showcasing some fantastically on-theme outfits.
Unfortunately, Tuesday’s “Taylor vs. Travis” theme didn’t quite hit the mark. Intended to tap into the media frenzy surrounding Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce, the day left many students uninterested. Some grades boycotted, with one showing up as emos, while others misinterpreted the theme deliberately—one student came dressed as Twilight’s Taylor Lautner—or simply sported random football gear and red sweaters. Nevertheless, the day did spark creativity and bring people together.
By Wednesday, Spirit Week took a tropical turn with the “Teen Beach Movie” theme. AIS students embraced the vibe in their own ways, donning Hawaiian shirts, leis, leather clothing, and an unexpectedly popular choice: bikinis over sweatshirts. While the tropical spirit was alive, some outfits veered into rather unconventional territory. Still, despite the odd choices, Teen Beach Movie was a bigger hit than Tuesday’s theme, with most students at least trying to get into the spirit.
Thursday’s theme, “Birds vs Everyone,” had the potential to be a lot of fun but was ultimately a bit confusing. While most students thought the theme was to either show up with Eagles gear or represent another football team, others showed up in full bird costumes. Some students even thought the theme had something to do with the video game, “Angry Birds” (I can’t be the only one, right?). The good-natured misinterpretations definitely added to the charm of Spirit Week.
After a week of questionable outfits, Friday’s AIS/EA Day brought everything back into focus with the traditional “Blue and Gold Day.” AIS students went all out, proudly wearing their school colors with blue and gold face paint, scarves, and other various spirit accessories. The day was a unified display of school pride, and Spirit Week wrapped up on a high note. Whether on the sports field or in the hallways, it was clear that AIS spirit was alive and well.
