Fielding a Change

Agnes Irwin has recently made the decision to upgrade Carter field to AstroTurf’s Paris Poligras and Phelps field to AstroTurf’s RootZone. This improvement to the school facilities is unlike any other turf field of independent schools in the entire Pennsylvania area. This will create an environment for athletes to compete on Olympic-quality fields and improve their athletic performance in the sport of their choice. As Agnes Irwin is home to top-ranked teams in a variety of sports, this upgrade will improve player performance, due to the speed of the AstroTurf.

In addition, players are extremely excited for this change. One field hockey player states: “I’m so excited, and I think it will bring so many good players from other schools” (anonymous). Players expect teams to improve, as new players will gravitate towards the school, due to the new fields. Players believe that these new fields will be “life changing.” Due to the new construction date of May 20th, the fields will not disrupt any athletic season. Therefore, are there any downsides to the fields themselves? The answer from a majority of students is a resounding “no.”

While students have many positive thoughts about this project, there is an issue of parking. The parking at Agnes Irwin is very limited, and with construction closing a majority of the parking spots on the line, outside of school, this may affect everyday life. Nevertheless, due to the later construction date, many seniors will no longer need to park their cars at school. Hopefully, students will be able to combat this issue and enjoy the fields.

Overall, these new fields will change Agnes Irwin for the better.
