Taylor Swift took the internet by surprise when she announced her engagement to star football player Travis Kelce via instagram. On August 26, 2025, Swift captioned her post: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” This post reached over thirty seven million likes within a few weeks, making it the eighth/tenth most popular post on instagram, holds the record for the most reposts and is currently the most liked post by a female musician. Even through an announcement about her personal life, Swift has continued to be one of the most influential women of the 21st century.
Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce first began dating during the summer of 2023. From that moment, Swift’s fans, or Swifties, searched for “easter eggs” in interviews or shows as engagement announcements. Taylor often provides little clues or “easter eggs” that provide insight into future details in her career or life. Therefore, many already expected Swifties to speculate. Of the thousands of crazy theories, one was that their two names, Travis and Taylor, stood for the letters TNT, and as Travis gave Taylor a bracelet with these letters, he was going to propose.
In all of this excitement and theories, there were also a multitude of hateful responses to this announcement. Some criticized Kelce’s political stance or even Swift’s songs and lyrics that she wrote about Travis. Overall, many people dislike Taylor due to her long-term success, going as far as to leave negative comments on light-hearted posts. Taylor has gone as far as to disable the hateful comments, reminding her listeners that while “the haters gonna hate, hate, hate” she’s “just gonna shake, shake, shake,” (Shake it Off). Society should follow in Taylor’s footsteps, just as one should focus on the positive aspects of life.
