Recent Horror Video Games

2020 has proven to be a great year for the gaming community. Many new mainstream games like Among Us and Fall Guys have achieved massive success, with the first reaching millions of downloads. On the other hand, many other horror games have come out in the wake of October, many of which have branched away from the general audience but have leaned more towards the Halloween spirit! Here’s a list of some of the horror games I suggest:

Steam rating: Overwhelmingly Positive

Phasmophobia is a terrifying yet family friendly game that has recently exploded on the streaming website Twitch. It is a MMO, or a Massively Multiplayer Online Game, where your character hunts ghosts with 3 other players. You and your teammates must explore a house and find out enough information about a ghost in order to find out what type of ghost you’re dealing with. Clues like temperature, a spirit box, and an EMF reader lead you to your conclusion. The game terrifies players in an ingenious yet simple way, with silent but tense gameplay. It is a unique game that can only be felt with experience.

Almost everybody in the gaming community is excited from the return of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. Through Playstation 5’s trailer of the game, it seems like the much-loved franchise is coming out with a bang, including new antagonists and protagonists. The production value was evidently improved, and there is questioning of a new gameplay mechanic for this game. Usually FNAF games consist of a stationary player, but it seems like this new game is going to have some free-roam mechanics like its predecessor FNAF: Sister Location. Overall, the FNAF community has high hopes for this game and for the original developer, Scott Cawthon, to continue his streak of amazing games.

Steam Rating: Very Positive

GAMEPLAY WARNING: GORE, DISTURBING IMAGES

Visage is possibly the most terrifying game out of every game on this list. In this slow paced game, the player roams around a large house and finds items that start chapters, with each chapter focusing on a certain person. There will be four chapters, with the third chapter, “Rakan” having been recently released. This game will horrify those who are scared of the dark, or more specifically, the things that hide in the dark. Gaming Youtuber 8-BitRyan described it as “one of the most terrifying indie horror games I have seen in recent years.”

Developer: Supermassive Games

Steam Rating: Mostly Positive

RATING MATURE: BLOOD, INTENSE VIOLENCE, AND STRONG LANGUAGE

After Supermassive Games’s hit games Until Dawn and Man of Medan, they are continuing their series called the Dark Pictures Anthology. Little Hope is a game played out like a movie, except for the fact that players make fatal decisions that can change the storyline completely. This game follows a group of characters trapped in the town called Little Hope, where witch trials were previously held in the far past. The characters phase between the past and the future, while trying to escape and fight their own terrifying demons. Little Hope comes back with its intense and disturbing gore as its signature style. This game has superb graphics and an engaging storyline, although it starts out as an eerie slow burn.
