One of Agnes Irwin’s most sacred traditions, which takes place every year in the late winter months, is the notorious hallway competition. For over a decade, each grade bands together and completely decks out a hallway based on a certain theme. Students get both creative and competitive, resulting in an extremely entertaining event. Some of its notable past themes include Peterpan and Neverland from the class of 2018, and Orange is the New Freshman (prison themed) from the class of 2024.
This year, the competition is just as heated. We have the freshmen doing their hallway based on the movie Home, the sophomores with their Heated Rivalry Philadelphia Flyers hallway, the juniors with The City of Sisterly Love, and the seniors with the Masters Tournament. During the decorative period, I highly suggest steering clear of the hallways that are still a work in progress; I guarantee you will either trip on a cardboard cutout of a purple alien or get stuck in traffic worse than in the SLC during middle school lunch (which I learnt the hard way).
Students bring in supplies to decorate from all over the school and even their homes; whether its giant rolls of colored paper, tape, scissors, and cardboard stolen from the art rooms, or a full on movie projector, people come in more than prepared. The dedication of the students is also impressive. Some have stayed after school until 8:00 to tirelessly work on their hallways.
When asked about who they thought would win, many teachers seemed pretty confident in their answer. Both Mr. Hurford and Ms. Bilson placed their bets on the freshmen, but Beasom has faith in the older grades, saying that he thinks it will be “between the seniors and the juniors.” However, it seems that the green class tends to dominate the polls, which means it’s looking good for our seniors this year. This is their last year to participate in the competition, and they feel “sad that it’s our last year, we will miss it. but we did a great job coming together as a grade to create this and I think we did really well.”
All the grades did a fantastic job with their hallways, making it a tight competition. It all comes down to the judges and their final decision. As for me, I’m feeling confident in the juniors, although I am biased. I guess we will have to wait until Monday to find out who is going to win! Good luck!
