Some Delicious Bytes

Just before winter break, Dr. G made the entire theater audibly gasp with the announcement of an exciting new Owls Nest feature that would change the lives of AIS students. Students now have the ability to pre-order sandwiches from the Deli under the “Student Life” section of the digital student hub, Owl’s Nest. Between 7 AM and 10:15 AM daily, students can now customize a sandwich by choosing from the usual selections of toppings, condiments, proteins, and breads. With this new feature, the sandwich line has drastically decreased, giving students more time to enjoy lunch.

Although officially added to Owls Nest in 2023, the production of this app actually began in 2018. After releasing the first version of the app in 2018, Dr. G found the app to be receiving only 10-12 orders at its peak. Following the 2020 lockdown, the app was never reactivated, as its initial launch proved to be unsuccessful. However, as the schedule was modified in 2023, and the lunch period shortened, there was a new-found desire to reinstall the pre-order app. In an attempt to shorten the lengthy sandwich lines, Dr. G updated and reactivated the app. In fact, Dr.G stated, “the updated version is much improved over the original.”

Since the release of the preorder app this December, the ordering time has actually expanded, giving students more time to place their order. When the ordering deadline was 9:45, the app received about twenty-one orders daily; however, the day the ordering window expanded to 10:15, the app received forty-four orders. The benefit of the pre-order app has already presented itself through the less crammed cafeteria and shorter lunch lines.

In addition to the many benefits of the app, came a Crushed-It Cup. Following the release of the app, Mrs. Leonard presented a dual Crushed it Cup to Dr. G and Mrs. Peters of Culinart. The award recognized the two contributors to the app for their hard work and dedication to a better lunch for the student body. According to Dr. G students have access to the course which will teach them how to create a revolutionary program, such as the one he designed himself. In fact, Dr. G stated that “everything that [he] did to make that app is taught in Computer Science II.”
