A Case for Men’s History Month

A Case for Men’s History Month

“Since the dawn of time, men have been alive.” A change.org petition raises this astute point. If women get a history month for being alive since the dawn of time, why shouldn’t men?

Men have a history and we should be able to celebrate this. Their month should take place during April, after Women’s History Month, to promote gender equality. It is unfortunate that men are underrepresented when women have an entire month to themselves. The changing political climate has unfortunately led to women being overrepresented; this is especially reflected in education.

If you open a history book or look at curriculums, it is astounding how overrepresented women are. Some students complain that a whopping 5% of philosophers their teachers introduce them to are women. This excessive empowerment might make women think that they can pursue whatever they want, leading to even more overrepresentation until we spiral out of control as a society!

During her senior assembly, AIS student Sydney Pearson showed us the urgency and gravity of this dangerous overrepresentation. It is sickening that men are forced to have larger pockets. Why should women get the privilege of having smaller or nonexistent pockets? Men’s fashion is designed to force them to carry a woman’s belongings for her. If Men’s History Month was implemented, we could restore the social balance and achieve justice for men.

As an all-girls school, it is especially important that we highlight men’s achievements. They have a history and we should include this history into our learning. To represent them, we could start a CAB (Center for the Advancement of Boys) as well as a History of Men’s Protest class. In addition, to show your support, make sure to sign the petition, “There should be a Men’s History Month because there is a Women’s History Month!” started by Blake Jewett on change.org. We are only 299 signatures short of our 500-person goal. The petition is important because “despite their contributions, there has been little recognition of men’s achievements as a whole. This creates an imbalance in society when one gender is given more importance over the other. By dedicating a month to men’s history, we can balance the gender gap.” Please support this important cause and sign your name today to support the men in our community!
